Cold Calls-They Don’t Have to Be Stressful

Whither you are making calls for your business or the school charity, cold calls can be stressful if you allow it to be.  Here are a few points that will assist you in relaxing and making a success of your calls.

  • Psych yourself up.  Remember that this is your passion and allow that to show. Believe in what you are calling about and yourself and you will have success.
  • Relax yourself before you start.  Some people go for a run or garden.  Stretching, or singing  releases tension.
  • Rehearse what you are going to say.  This helps you be confident in your presentation.
  • A bulleted script can help to make you more comfortable, but you need to make it your own.  Reading a printed out script comes out sounding read.
  • Smile!  Research shows that smiling makes you sound more relaxed and believable.  It also helps you relax.
  • Keep your pitch short–about 15 seconds.  This keeps you from getting too nervous.  You do not have to explain the entire program in a few minutes.  Allow your contact to absorb what you are saying and ask any questions from you.
  • Do not think of yourself as a failure because someone says no.  Be aware that it usually takes 20 call calls to net even one sale.  Every rejection just gets you closer to that sale.

Just remember with cold calling that the person on the other end of the line only can go by your voice.  If you treat them like a friend, it will become less stressful for you to call.  You can even get so that you enjoy it.  If people are rude, you can even make an ugly face and they will not see it!  You cannot do that if you are face to face!
